According to the movie's official Facebook page, the next Avatar film will open in theatres December 18, 2020.

Cameron originally hoped its sequels would be released from 2015 onwards, however his idea for two sequels developed into four, and he noted earlier this year that the series was an "epic undertaking".

"Great to be working with the best team in the business", Cameron said in the post. And it will immediately be followed a year later by Avatar 3, which now arrives on December 17, 2021.

The official Facebook page for James Cameron's sci-fi movie franchise announced on Saturday that dates have been set for the release of the next four "Avatar" sequels, and they're all right around the big December holiday movie rush, though in different years.

The "Avatar" sequel has been in the pipeline for quite some time now. "The journey continues December 18th, 2020, December 17th, 2021, December 20th, 2024 and December 19th, 2025!" The first sequel had been expected in 2018 but Cameron this year said that timetable wouldn't be met.

Avatar became the highest-grossing film of all time when it was released back in 2009, with total earnings of $2,787,965,087. Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, and Stephen Lang will all return to reprise their roles in some capacity, though it hasn't been revealed if all four actors will appear in all four sequels.

The filmmaker told The Daily Beast: "The thing is, my focus isn't on Avatar 2". This is my day job and pretty soon we'll be 24/7.
