The secret meeting comes amid efforts to pave the way for a meeting between Mr Sharif and Mr Modi on the sidelines of the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), an emerging economic and security alliance.

However, Maryam Nawaz confirmed the trip in a tweet.

"In these circumstances, Narendra Modi's close aide's meeting with (the) Pakistani prime minister has sent a wave of restlessness among (the) masses", the resolution said.

Hours after the Prime Minister's Office issued the directive, the Inter-Services Public Relations said the Army had rejected the notification, calling it "incomplete".

On the other hand, some opposition politicians were angry over the government's decision to keep Mr Jindal's visit as well the PM's meeting with him secret.

The Indian delegation then traveled to the Prime Minister's House in the capital for a meeting.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) expressed reservation over the arrival of Indian delegation and submitted a resolution in Punjab Assembly.

According to Pakistani news channel, ARY news, Jindal was part of a three-member Indian delegation which met with Sharif in the hill station of Murree, just outside Islamabad.

Has Sajjan Jindal come to Pakistan to rescue Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is now embroiled in crisis, the opposition leader asked.

Pakistani analysts and the media speculated that the Indian team had either come with a special message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, or had come to negotiate the release of former Indian naval officer Kulbhushan Jadhav, who a Pakistani military court has alleged was an Indian spy and awarded the death sentence. At that time, he also tweeted "In Lahore to greet PM Nawaz Sharif on his birthday".

Imran Khan's party today (April 28) submitted an adjournment motion in the National Assembly secretariat.

Sharif's family members received Jindal at the Islamabad airport after he landed there from Afghanistan. "Has Sajjan Jindal come to Pakistan to rescue Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is now embroiled in crisis?" His younger brother, former Congress party lawmaker Naveen Jindal, is chairman of the umbrella Jindal Group.

Jindal was present at the wedding of Sharif's granddaughter when Modi attended the ceremony in Lahore December 2015.
