Trump makes first visit as president to Arlington National Cemetery

"Every time you see the sun rise over this blessed land, please know your fearless sons and daughters pushed away the knife and delivered for us all that great and glorious dawn", Trump said.

Trump addressed Gold Star families, those that have lost loved service members: "They each had their own names, their own stories, their own lovely dreams".

The president was accompanied to Arlington cemetery by Vice President Mike Pence, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as well as a slew of advisers and Cabinet secretaries, including veterans' chief David Shulkin and housing chief Ben Carson.

The president gave his first Memorial Day address, after laying the wreath, like so many presidents before him, as part of the ceremony to remember, and honor, the men and women who died fighting for the United States of America.

A somber Trump, clad in a dark blue suit buttoned over a light blue striped tie, placed a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery, and paused for several seconds with his eyes closed, and his hands still on the wreath, before stepping back and standing at attention while a U.S. Army bugler played taps just a few feet away.

She said her loved one's "name was Jimmy".

The president chatted with a woman visiting one of the tombstones.

Trump's remarks at the Memorial Day ceremony was his first public appearance since returning from a nine-day foreign trip.

Army Green Beret Captain Andrew W. Byers lived in the Colorado Springs, Colo., area near Fort Carson, where he was assigned to the 10th Special Forces Group. John Kelly's other son, Johnny, is preparing for his fifth military deployment. And Kelly's son-in-law Jake is a wounded warrior. During last year's presidential campaign, he notably engaged in a dispute with Capt. Humayun Khan's Gold Star parents, who spoke out against Trump in a Democratic National Convention speech. Trump said. "I believe that God has a special place in heaven for those who laid down their lives so that others may live free".

"Here at this hallowed shrine, we honor the noblest among us, the men and women who paid the ultimate price for victory and for freedom", said Trump.

Trump is also set to lay a wreath Monday at the cemetery, the final resting place for many USA military members and others who have served the country.

Trump previewed the address Saturday before he flew home from Italy, the final stop on his first trip overseas since taking office.
