China will continue with climate pact even if US pulls out

Trump tweeted on Wednesday morning: "I will be announcing my decision on the Paris Accord over the next few days". On the campaign trail, Trump vowed to pull out of the agreement. One potential compromise that had been discussed involved remaining in, but adjusting the USA emissions targets.

"We're going to cancel the Paris Climate Agreement and stop all payments of USA tax dollars to United Nations global warming programs", Trump said during an energy speech in May 2016. The 2015 accord includes almost 200 nations that agreed to voluntarily reduce greenhouse gas emissions to help fight climate change.

Countries can't withdraw until three years after the Paris Agreement went into effect.

Alternatively, the president could pursue a faster course by dropping out of an underlying treaty, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

During his 2016 presidential campaign, Trump denounced the accord, and called global warming a hoax aimed at weakening USA industry.

Li Keqiang, the Chinese Premier, said says fighting climate change is a "global consensus [that is] not invented by China", in apparent reference to a 2012 tweet by Mr Trump where he claimed "global warming was created by and for the Chinese" to damage American trade.

After his meeting with Abbas, Trump returned to Jerusalem for a solemn tribute to the 6 million Jews killed in the Holocaust. In exchange, the USA and the European Union lifted some of the sanctions that have crippled the country's economy.

Axios reported that details on how the USA will leave the accord are still being finalized by a team including Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt.

The official told reporters that the European Union and China will also "spell out" how they plan to meet their commitments to the landmark worldwide accord to fight global warming at talks in Brussels on Friday.

Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-Fla.), who helped draft the resolution, said the Climate Solutions Caucus would need to amp up its efforts to get lawmakers behind policies to help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. Several of the country's largest coal companies have sought bankruptcy protection in the previous year, largely due to competition from natural gas made cheaper and more abundant by hydraulic fracturing.

If President Trump does end up pulling out of the Paris climate accord, it seems Ivanka has failed to have a strong influence on his stance on climate change. Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell and 21 other GOP Senators sent the president a letter last week urging him to ditch the agreement.

Hundreds of high-profile businesses have spoken out in favor of the deal, including Apple, Google and Walmart.

The US is the world's second-largest emitter of carbon dioxide, responsible for 15 per cent of all emissions.
