Its nest consists of a voluminous cup made of soft vegetable fluff, fine fibers and rootlets, decorated on the outside with moss and bits of lichen. It is located near the tip of a hanging bamboo stem, approximately 3 m. of height in the understory or on the edge of a small clearing.

They feed on the giant thistle (Cirsium sp.); also go up to the canopy to visit flowers of epiphytes (Ericaceae) and vines (Passiflora). The females visit flowers of Centropogon long corolla, and fly among scattered shrubs along the foraging routes.

Both sexes visit other shrubs in clearings and edges, especially those of Fuchsia and Cestrum < Habitat and Distribution

They live in oak forests of the highest parts, especially in the margins and clearings in the canopy, or in adjacent areas of secondary growth.

p> It is a relatively common resident species in the higher parts of the Central Volcanic Cordilleras and of Talamanca, from the upper limit of the trees in descent to 2000 m, although its greater abundance is registered above 2500 m. It is a sporadic visitor, perhaps seasonal, up to 1850 m.

Demography and Conservation

Only males defend feeding grounds.

Measures 13 cm. The male weighs 10 grams. and the female 8.5 grs. It is the largest hummingbird and with the longest peak of the highest mountains.

The female above is tanned green. It presents the most tanned tail and becomes blackish in the terminal part, and the 2 to 4 more external helmsmen exhibit the grayish white tip. The postocular list is white, the headphones are fuscas, and underneath it is opaque gray, with bronzed spots on the sides and mottled fusco in the throat. The beak and legs are brownish below (especially in the throat), with a scaly before clear. The front edges in the feathers of the upper region are more prominent in the head and neck.
