Predators top Penguins to tie Stanley Cup Final

Sidney Crosby #87 of the Pittsburgh Penguins looks on against the Nashville Predators during the second period in Game Four of the 2017 NHL Stanley Cup Final at the Bridgestone Arena on June 5, 2017 in Nashville, Tennessee. In Game 1, they scored three times in the last five minutes of the first period en route to a 5-3 victory.

The Predators outscored the Penguins 9-2 in the two games at Nashville after Pittsburgh picked up 5-3 and 4-1 wins at home. Nashville Predators' Viktor Arvidsson (38) and Pittsburgh Penguins' Carl Hagelin (62) trade punches during the third period in Game 5 of the NHL hockey Stanley Cup Final, Thursday, June 8, 2017, in Pittsburgh.

The Predators have had answers for Malkin, shutting him down inside and outside the Pens' zone. Murray, or at this point whomever plays in game five, needs to make a big save in the big situations. Pittsburgh's stars, as they are known to do, victimized the Predators, who shrunk in response. "I didn't know the 70 percent part of it, but we are very aware this is the biggest game of the year, that's just obvious, so we are going to be ready to rock and roll tonight", said Colton Sissons. "And that's just going to be like (that)".

There has yet to be a competitive game from start to finish, with both clubs dominating on their home ice.

Sports' Kevin Allen explains why Pittsburgh and Nashville can feel good about their chances heading into Game 5. The Predators still have to win at least one game at PPG Paints Arena and they failed to do that despite outplaying the Penguins substantially in Games 1 and 2. Filip Forsberg is the second choice among Nashville players at plus-900. The period ended 9-9. His teammates weren't sharing any information either.

Jake Guentzel, Pittsburgh's leading postseason goal scorer with 13, had three shots on Rinne. He had played great in the back-to-back road losses.

Bonino now boasts four goals and seven points through 21 postseason games, a step back from the 18 points in 24 games that he was able to put up during the team's successful championship run in 2016. Instead, his penalty was just one of 14 given to the Predators with 10 handed out to Pittsburgh for a total of 100 penalty minutes.

A more potent power play would help Malkin and Kessel, who lead the team with 11 power-play points apiece. Still, it lessens the overall depth of the Pittsburgh lineup and allows the Preds two clean matchups - with Josi and Ellis guarding Crosby, who was a force in Game 4.

Ekholm said the Predators tried to answer nearly too quickly.

"They both have their hands full", Laviolette said. "That's going to happen". Pittsburgh had averaged one goal per game in the series to that point. "We know we've got to win one road game and then a home game to boot".

Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan thinks his Penguins have gotten better, calling Game 5 the best they've played yet in this series.

Rain most of Monday kept the crowd outside from reaching the more than 50,000 who turned Saturday night for the first Stanley Cup Final game in Tennessee. "I mean working hard in a game trumps all no matter skill level or this or that".

"So I think the only game really where they did get behind us was [Monday] night".

This is the first time Nashville has faced elimination this postseason after sweeping Chicago, beating St. Louis in six games and then Anaheim in six to claim the Western Conference title. The Predators won 4-1 to tie the series 2-2.

Laviolette said his Predators are honest with each other, especially coming off a loss. "When the games are so far out, they don't want to price below the market", he said. We generated a lot of chances.
