A 45-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman have been taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds from Moscow Regional Court, said Moscow Region's Health Ministry, as quoted by Russian Federation news agencies.

We were at a different session when (we) heard shots fired. Sofya Rubasskaya said she saw a guard and a court official injured.

Tatiana Petrova, spokeswoman for the Russian Interior Ministry, said the suspects attempted to seize the guards' guns while inside an elevator.

Four people standing trial were killed when a gunfight broke out in a Moscow courthouse.

No other details were immediately available.

Russia's Investigative Committee said the five handcuffed defendants were being escorted by two guards in a lift when they made their move.

The incident began during a hearing as five defendants accused of "banditry" attempted to take weapons away from court security guards at the Moscow Regional Court, the police spokesman said.

The shooting occurred during an ongoing court process against members of the so-called GTA gang, who are accused of killing 17 motorists around Moscow between 2013 and 2014. The two others defendants were seriously wounded, the statement said.

The group was dubbed in the Russian press as the GTA Gang, a reference to the Grand Theft Auto violent series of video games.

Activities at the building have reportedly resumed after a brief evacuation following the incident.

The suspects were killed when trying to escape.
