The incident began during a hearing as five defendants accused of "banditry" attempted to take weapons away from court security guards at the Moscow Regional Court, the police spokesman said.

The shooting occurred during an ongoing court process against members of the so-called GTA gang, who are accused of killing 17 motorists around Moscow between 2013 and 2014. The two others defendants were seriously wounded, the statement said.

The group was dubbed in the Russian press as the GTA Gang, a reference to the Grand Theft Auto violent series of video games.

Activities at the building have reportedly resumed after a brief evacuation following the incident.

The suspects were killed when trying to escape.
