Personal recommendations will also be available on the tab for the shows, and it's not just YouTube and Netflix the new feature rivals - TV networks should also be threatened as they plan to stream live sports, too. And while the first batch of content will come from creators who've been invited and/or paid to participate, the platform will eventually feature a much wider group.

According to an official statement released earlier today, Facebook are introducing a new "Watch" tab into your feed which will allow you to watch both live and recorded shows. Show Pages are organized in a way that makes it easy for people to understand what a show is all about, watch episodes and other related videos, and connect with communities that have formed around a show.

Facebook's "Watch" puts them in direct competition with YouTube.

The world's largest social network, Facebook, has been dropping hints to become a source of original and well-produced videos, moving away from content produced exclusively by users. Another chief differentiation that capitalizes on Facebook's social networking expertise, the company said, is that viewers can comment or chat with friends while watching. "On Facebook, videos are discovered through friends and bring communities together".

Danker says the new platform will be available on mobile, on desktop and laptop, and in our TV apps.

Now, Facebook is going to add even more to that experience by introducing #Watch.

While Facebook's Watch has not launched in India yet, it can be expected to come to the country soon being one of its biggest markets.

Major League Baseball has also been streaming one game each week on Facebook.

ATTN said on Wednesday it had two original series coming to Facebook Watch: a health programme with actress Jessica Alba and a relationship advice show.

"We think creating a show has a number of benefits, like the ability to reach a predictable and loyal audience", Facebook's Nick Grudin, VP of Media Partnerships, wrote of the plan. Watch will have three sections: Most Talked About, What's Making People Laugh and What Friends Are Watching.

US users were provided with a Videos tab just over a year ago, and this seems to be the natural next step in Facebook's video plans. As advertising dollars earmarked for television move online, Facebook is seeking a way to coax its huge audience - 2 billion users monthly - to see it as a destination for video.
