The Teresa Lozano Long Institute for Latin American Studies (LLILAS) and the Latin American Collection Nettie Lee Benson of the University of Texas at Austin are pleased to announce fellowships for LLLS Benson for Latin American researchers.

The scholarships are aimed at professors, research professionals, and students with the following attributes:

  • Researchers with a doctoral degree belonging to colleges of Latin American universities
  • Researchers with an advanced rank within the administrative body of art museums or other research institutions
  • Students who are about to complete their doctoral thesis

The main purpose of the scholarship is to provide opportunities for researchers to consult the important collections of manuscripts, books and other Latin American materials housed in the Benson Collection. The University of Texas has other collections, including: the Faculty of Law Library, the Latin American Art Collection at the Blanton Art Museum, the Faculty of Fine Arts Library (with materials in musicology and ethnomusicology) Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library (which features the official archives of President Johnson's government). The Central America-related collections housed in the Bneson Collection include: the Arturo Taracena Flores Collection, the digital archives of the Historical Archive of the Guatemalan National Police (AHPN), digital versions of the Radio Venceremos transmissions in El Salvador and the archive of Ernesto Cardinal.

Research trips should generally be conducted during the academic calendar of the University of Texas. That is, between the end of August and early December for the fall semester, or between January and mid-May for the spring semester. Dates could be considered in the intermediate summer and winter vacation periods, but it is important to note that both faculty and a large part of the research staff are outside Austin during these dates.

At term of their research stay, the grantees will submit a report (maximum two sheets), to evaluate the usefulness of the materials consulted in the library during their research. Academics will credit Benson LLILAS in publications resulting from their research in Austin. In addition, researchers will donate a copy of such publications to the Nettie Lee Benson Collection.
