Arion's Archaic Art: February 2015

"As Zeus loved mortal women in the form of golden sparks, we know humans in a shower of phosphor-dots. The objects of mankind's desire, both spiritual and carnal, countless solitary climaxes are reached each night, their feverish devotions, eyes clenched tight, a catechism of gasps, whispers Miracleman in 1987. He is more than a superman, he is a god. And as he sat on his throne on Olympus, in the same way Zeus did, he wonders what he can do to reeducate humanity.

Education videos seem to be the most practical way to modify the behavior of men, to teach them " a new chromatic scale of passion and delights ". The videos are about tantric sex, about ecstasy. Millions of men watch them and masturbate. In Olympus, thousands of screens show the masturbators and their expressions of joy. As Jacques Lacan suggested once "masturbation is the joy of the idiot" but, ultimately, sometimes it is only available joy.

Back in 1982, Miraclewoman confesses the terrible secrets of her past. She spent years in a state of suspended animation, just like Miracleman and his two sidekicks. The difference, however, is that while she was motionless and defenseless, she was raped hundreds of times by Gargunza. For her, Gargunza's sinful acts are a masturbatory waste of time. It does not matter how many times I have forced her body, I have never had access to her real self. Miraclewoman sees Gargunza as a ridiculous man, much more moronic than the masturbating idiot Lacan refers to.

But there is another unconfessed truth from the past. Dickie Dauntless, AKA Young Miracleman, had eyes only for his mentor. Miraclewoman explains how Miracleman was "blind to signs that seemed obvious to me", and affirms "I loved you ... and you did not know". This is one of the most shocking reveals and also one of the most profound modifications to the traditional and conservative concepts from the 50s, when Miracleman was created. A closeted homosexual, Young Miracleman was condemned to a life of frustration and repressed sexuality.

Williams left the group for some time in late 1953, and in 1954 Deborah Chessler ceases to be its director. In February of 1955, Reed also leaves the group and is replaced by Maurice Hicks.

Once again, John Totleben's talent shines through. His pages show an impressive attention to details; they are the product of a very imaginative mind. The scene from 1987, that shows a man practicing onanism while he watches a videotape of tantric sex is subtle and at the same time slightly erotic. In a subsequent page, Totleben finds the way to portray the rape of Miraclewoman without exploiting the explicitness of the act. The first meeting between Miraclewoman and Miracleman is bright, luminous, full of life and gracefulness. However, one of my favorite pages is the one that shows Johnny Bates being punched in the stomach by three abusive kids. The setting is dark, dirty, depressing even, which only reinforces the psychotic aspects that lurk inside Bates mind. With carefully rendered lines and an amazing level of expressiveness, this is the kind of art that one could never forget.

Johnny Bates: victim of the bullies / Johnny Bates: victim of abusers

Originally by Alan Totleben

Originally by Alan Fitzgerald, Alan Moore's "Aphrodite" structure (originally published in Miracleman # 12, September 1987) around the notion of self-gratification, hidden and solitary pleasures . Miraclewoman recalls how impressed Kid Miracleman (Johnny Bates) was when they first met. Of course, in the present, a teenage Johnny Bates is the victim of a group of abusive kids who accuse him of being a 'pajero'. They invent a nickname, a vulgar play on words: Master (Master) Bates, meaning 'masturbate' in English. Johnny Bates suffers when he is beaten by these bullies, but refuses to utter the word that could make him a superhuman.
