Legend has it ....

In the six hundredth year, a shepherd named Kaldi lived in Ethiopia. One day when she was tending her herd of goats, she noticed that the animals had a strange behavior. Nervously they came and went, they went up and down, in a state of agitation that lasted all the way back and lingered for one night, which became endless.

History of Mariposa | Discover Yosemite National Park
The towns of Mariposa and Coulterville have utility districts, with varying levels of service provided within the subdivisions. In terms of establishing permanent towns and leaving a written historic record, this belief is understandable, if incorrect.

Only the next morning the herd seemed to calm down and so he gently followed the drowsy shepherd to the pasturelands. Until tempting cherries stopped their way, and after nibbling on them, the goats resumed their nervous behavior the day before.

Kaldi looked at the plants that had apparently caused the change in his herd and cautiously tried a leaf and a fruit . The first thing he noticed was that it was not a cherry bush, and that the taste was not as pleasant as he expected. But he also felt that the fatigue produced by the long night of insomnia had faded and was replaced by an energy that drove him to action.
