Thanks to their last-place finish, the Sabres have the highest odds - just 18.5 percent - for the first overall pick in tonight's NHL Draft Lottery.

Don Waddell, as interim general manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, will be representing the team Saturday at the NHL Draft Lottery in Toronto.

The Carolina Hurricanes made the biggest jump in the draft order by moving from the 11th spot to 2nd.

Moreover, this is a great opportunity for the Canes to get that final push they need to break a nine year long playoff drought (longest active streak in the NHL).

The Detroit Red Wings will pick sixth overall in June's 2018 National Hockey League draft, after losing out on a franchise defenseman who would have accelerated their rebuild.

Buffalo Sabres center Jack Eichel (15) celebrates a goal during the first period of an NHL hockey game against the Colorado Avalanche, Sunday, Feb. 14, 2016, in Buffalo, N.Y. Buffalo won 4-1. "We know what's going to happen at No. 1, so by having the No. 2 pick at least we're going to control it", Waddell said.

Botterill said it was premature to say who the Sabres would consider selecting, though Hurricanes president Don Waddell guessed it will likely be Dahlin.

Right wing Andrei Svechnikov of Barrie in the Ontario Hockey League could be chosen No. 2. Or two of them if you think that class is only four defensemen.

The Flyers were beneficiaries of the lottery a season ago, going from the 13th overall pick to the second overall pick and selecting Nolan Patrick. Carolina finished with the 11th worst record, leaving the possibility that a team outside the bottom 10 will pick among the top three for a second straight season.

This year's draft class is widely regarded as one of the best in recent memory, so it's not all that bad for the Canucks to move down one spot.

This year's draft will be in Dallas on June 22-23.
