NRA Tells Judge It Fears Harassment in Suit Over Florida Gun Law

Thursday night the National Rifle Association opens its annual meeting in Dallas, Texas. Last year, in Atlanta, guns were banned during an appearance by President Trump.

It just doesn't make any sense! Prior to and during Pence's speech, attendees are prohibited from bringing "firearms and firearm accessories, knives or weapons of any kind", according to the event page.

"Wait wait wait wait wait wait you're telling me to make the VP safe there aren't any weapons around but when it comes to children they want guns everywhere?" he wrote.

Established in 1871, the National Rifle Association was once a civil rights group dedicated to preserving the Second Amendment but in recent decades, it has devolved into an extreme right-wing organization that has opposed closing loopholes in background check laws and restrictions on the sale of firearms to suspected terrorists identified on the FBI's "no fly" list. A virulent recruitment video by the NRA suggests joining the group is the best defense against political opponents such as Barack Obama, Hollywood actors, the news media, school teachers and liberals.

Parkland student David Hogg started a petition asking Pence to drop out of his speaking slot at the NRA convention 2018. The petition has 45,739 signatures towards it 50,000 goal.

Trump met with NRA officials at the White House twice in less than a week following the Parkland massacre, and about a week after the attack on the Florida high school, Trump called the NRA leadership "great people and great American patriots" on Twitter.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student Alex Wind speaks onstage at March For Our Lives, March 24, 2018, in Washington, D.C.

Firearms were also banned during Trump's NRA speech in Atlanta a year ago. The people are watching. "Don't be on the wrong side of history".

The move is part of a directive from the Secret Service, which will oversee security during the leadership forum on Friday where the two are slated to speak.
