Mike Braun Wins Indiana Senate GOP Primary

Sarah Ann Jump/The Herald Mike Braun thanked his supporters after being named the victor in today's U.S. Senate race.

Wealthy former state legislator Mike Braun won the nomination with just over 40 percent as the two congressmen split the remainder of the vote right down the middle. Donnelly is considered one of the most vulnerable incumbent Democrats, and he's looking to hold his seat in a state Trump won in 2016 by 19 points.

It's been a busy primary season. "This victory is thanks to you, the many Hoosiers who have helped build this campaign from the ground up and voted for us".

He notes Braun won two terms in the Indiana House, and criticizes him for resigning in the middle of the second one to focus on his Senate campaign.

The former Jasper state legislator captured 41% of the vote to outdistance Representatives Todd Rokita and Luke Messer, who split the remaining vote nearly evenly.

He also indicated he will continue the tone and theme of his primary election campaign in his general election battle with Donnelly, regarded as among the most vulnerable Democratic senators up for re-election this year.

Mr. Messer will face Democratic.

And the third candidate, U.S. Representative Luke Messer, nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in the talks between North and South Korea.

Braun, a businessman and former state representative, touted his business experience and claimed his two opponents were cardboard cutouts of each other.

Another race of note was the Democratic primary to unseat Republican Trey Hollingsworth.

The Pakistan Central Mines Labour Federation says that up to 200 mine workers die on average in mine accidents every year. Two workers were rescued in an unconscious state, while bodies of two miners were recovered Saturday night.

Braun was accused of pushing legislation at the General Assembly that cut taxes for his timber holdings, Rokita was said to have conducted political activities on state government time and property while he was IN secretary of state, and Messer had to answer for two drunken-driving arrests IN the 1990s. Rokita got 30 percent of the vote, and Messer 29 percent.

Messer said he was disappointed by the result of the election, "but I wouldn't take any of it back".

"I've never been afraid of a fight", Donnelly said.

Rokita is now the congressional representative from Indiana's Fourth Congressional District, though he also spent time as the Indiana Deputy Secretary of State and Secretary of State before stepping into his current role.

His closest GOP rival was Muncie entrepreneur Jonathan Lamb, who loaned his campaign around $800,000 in an effort to keep pace with Pence.

State Rep. Jim Baird, of Greencastle, defeated two members of Mike Pence's gubernatorial administration to win the GOP primary in the heavily Republican 4th District.

Braun was elected to the Indiana State House as a Republican in 2014.

Renacci, a moderate Republican, has served in Congress since 2011. While Braun has said he is a "lifelong conservative", he has voted in Democratic primaries and CNN reported that Braun was listed in RNC voter data as a "hard Democrat" until at least 2012.
