Apple just made Apple Watch a lot smarter for runners

While Apple has official unveiled watchOS 5, it's only available via developer beta.

Apple also acknowledges that with new data channels and interactive notifications, the Apple Watch will be bombarded with a lot more interactive content.

Siri Shortcuts, a new tool that lets people create and use their own Siri commands, will also come to the Siri watch face. Third-party apps finally supported on the watch face.

Apple's WWDC 2018 opening keynote has now drawn to a close and just as had been predicted, the company showed off a raft of new software updates, all of which will arrive later this year.

For Activity Sharing competitions, users will be able to invite another Apple Watch wearer to compete in a seven-day activity competition with watchOS 5.

Workouts now support yoga and hiking, both measure heart rate to gauge performance. Apple will likely release the final version of WatchOS 5 when it announces its newest hardware later this year. A few other run-tracking tools are included in watchOS 5, including cadence data and rolling mile pace, so you can easily view the pace of your last mile while you're running.

While Apple hasn't mentioned it in its literature, but the Apple Watch Edition (original one) won't be getting watchOS 5 either since it shares the exact same hardware as normal Series 0 models. Revealed today at WWDC alongside iOS 12, watchOS 5 introduces a number of new features including a Walkie-Talkie app and a range of new workout-related options.

That said, the re-release of the Apple Watch Series 1 with the Series 2's processor - any Series 1 released after 2016 - will be able to run watchOS 5, according to Apple.

With a raise of the wrist, students can gain access to places including the library, dorms and events, and pay for snacks, laundry and dinners around campus simply by adding their ID cards to Wallet on Apple Watch.
