Briefing the media after the two leaders held talks for almost an hour on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said the meeting was "positive and forward looking and underpinned the spirit of the Wuhan summit". In the meeting, the two leaders will take stock of the implementation of decisions taken at the informal summit just over a month ago in Wuhan.

As India and Pakistan both have rich experience in maintaining security and combating crime, their entry will enhance the development potential and expand the room for cooperation between SCO members in terms of security, Liao said.

China is also pushing Xi's pet Belt and Road Initiative at the SCO Summit. Countries outside the SCO will be looking closely at what transpires at the summit.

In the wake of Washington's strained ties with Russia, China and Iran, officials said the SCO summit will provide an opportunity for President Xi and his Russian counterpart Putin to reflect on a common vision for the region and present the bloc as a powerful voice to deal with pressing global issues. The Special Representatives on the border issue will also meet this year.

India and China also signed agreements in the presence of PM Narendra Modi and President of China Xi Jinping.

The body of the man killed was removed from the boxing club at around 2pm and taken from the scene in a blacked out vehicle. There is still a heavy police presence at the club while forensic officers carry out their investigation.

The tensions over Iran come as another nuclear issue dominates headlines, with Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un preparing for an unprecedented summit in Singapore.

India was an observer at the SCO since 2005 and has generally participated in the ministerial-level meetings of the grouping which focus mainly on security and economic cooperation in the Eurasian region.

The officials said India is also likely to focus on importance of regional connectivity projects to boost trade among members of the SCO countries.

On Friday, PM Modi said he was excited to lead the Indian delegation for the SCO's first-ever meeting with the country as a full member.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will open late Saturday a two-day regional security summit attended by Russia, Iran and other allies confronting rising tensions with the United States over trade and Washington's withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal.

The SCO was founded at a summit in Shanghai in 2001 by the presidents of Russia, China, Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
