North American soccer fans have something to look forward to beyond Thursday's kickoff of the World Cup in Russian Federation.

Morocco on Wednesday lost out to a joint bid fronted by the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico who will now host the global sporting showpiece in eight years' time.

In a vote of more than 200 member nations of soccer's governing body in Moscow, the so-called United Bid beat out Morocco, 134-65.

The World Cup is returning to North American soil.

The "United Bid" calls for the U.S.to host 60 matches, including all games from the quarter-finals through to the final.

Canada's men's team has not played in the World Cup since 1986 but traditionally, host countries do get to play.

Although it will be the first World Cup to be hosted by three nations, the vast majority of matches will be held in the Unites States.

Although this time 207 FIFA federations will be voting, ignoring the recommendations of the technical experts, as happened in 2010 when Qatar emerged victorious for 2022, is a scenario the federations will take at their peril since this is an open ballot. Under the terms of the bid, Canada and Mexico will each host 10 matches.

The US hosted the World Cup in 1994, while the tournament was held twice in Mexico (1970 and 1986).

Confirmed: Harry and Meghan coming to NZ
Adorably, Prince Harry also gave Meghan a helping hand when it came to the all-important curtsey in front of the Queen . Not everyone, however, is happy with what the Duchess of Sussex wore at the event.

Cordeiro has said his bid would generate $14bn in revenue and make an $11bn profit for Federation Internationale de Football Association.

Hence the reason why they are so strong-minded about the thorny issue of the four overseas U.S. territories who Morocco believes should not be allowed to vote because of a conflict of interest.

The United States, Canada and Mexico were expected to qualify automatically for the tournament as has been the tradition for all World Cup host nations. "Congratulations to everyone who worked hard on this bid - it's going to be a great tournament!"

Monterrey, Guadalajara and Mexico City are up for consideration in Mexico, while Montreal, Toronto and Edmonton are the Canadian cities that have been proposed. The United Bid is expecting to make more than half that in ticket revenue alone.

The "United Bid" had been favourites from the start but Morocco's promise of a "European World Cup in Africa" was appealing to the committee.

However, Nigeria's relationship with Morocco has improved over the years leading to a first presidential visit by a Nigerian leader to the North African country.

"We are very excited and humbled that the FIFA member associations have entrusted the Concacaf region with the honour of hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup in its new extended format", CONCACAF said in a statement.

The key number is 104 but there is also the freaky and unprecedented scenario where both bids get rejected. "It would be a shame if countries that we always support were to lobby against the USA bid".

"The possibility of hosting the World Cup in Canada would be an absolute game-changing event for the sport in this country", deVos told Sportsnet this week.
