An audio recording that appears to capture the heartbreaking voices of small Spanish-speaking children crying out for their parents at a USA immigration facility took center stage Monday in the growing uproar over the Trump administration's policy of separating immigrant children from their parents.

Taking to Twitter, Bush also accused Trump of trying to use the plight of the migrant children as "a negotiating tool" to advance his own priorities on immigration with Congress, echoing a criticism leveled by many Democrats in recent days.

"That is no different than a U.S. citizen parent that is going through a judicial process, prosecuted for violating the law", Manuel Padilla Jr. of U.S. Border Patrol said of parents being separated from their children.

President Donald Trump has tried to blame Democrats, who hold no levers of power in the government, for the situation that has sparked fury and a national debate over the moral implications of his hard-line approach to immigration enforcement.

"We will not apologize for doing our job", said Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

Former Rep. David Jolly (R-Fla.) said that while Republicans like Sasse are starting to speak up on the growing crisis, it's unlikely that Republican leadership will put a clean bill on the floor that would have tough language unequivocally barring the Trump administration from separating families.

Grisham said Melania Trump "believes we need to be a country that follows all laws, but also a country that governs with heart".

Former First Lady Barbara Bush also criticised what's going on in a newspaper article. Children are not detained with their parents when those parents are facing a criminal charge, as per USA protocol.

Mr Trump's former chief strategist said Republicans would face steep consequences for pushing the compromise bill because it provides a path to citizenship for young "Dreamer" immigrants brought to the country illegally as children.

While the statement suggested the matter was an issue for Congress, Democratic lawmakers and others have pointed out that no law mandates the separation of children and parents at the border.

Trump was due to meet House Republicans on Tuesday evening as they prepared to vote on the two bills.

Children are being forced away from their parents after entering the United States border.

"I don't have any problem whatsoever allowing children of those who are coming in illegally to stay with their parents", he said. More adults were being jailed as a result, which led to their children being separated from them.

It's a rare public admonishment of current administration policy from Bush, who has seldom weighed in on politics since her husband left office. You know they come in based on merit, not lottery, or snuck across border.

Trump, who has made a tough stance on immigration a major goal of his presidency, responded sharply to critics on Monday.
